  • Doc's Symposium

    Wigan’s First Micro Pub :

    "SYMPOSIUM" Noun

(plural) -siums, -sia (-zɪə) (in classical Greece) a drinking party with intellectual conversation, music, etc

    Courtesy of Collins English dictionary

Micro pubs are a relatively new idea, the first one opened in Kent, England in 2005. It was a couple of years before others started to spring up around the country. Some micro pubs only sell beer and cider and some are tiny, they are opening in markets and empty retail shop units. Micro pubs tend to have shorter opening hours.

Doc’s Symposium was opened in August 2014 by Landlord and Landlady Chris and June Docherty as a semi retirement project after thirty years running renowned pubs and clubs in and around Wigan with the emphasis on real ales.

    The Story So Far...:

Doc's philosophy - A small free house with a welcoming atmosphere, serving cask ales, quality lagers, ciders, wines and foreign bottled beers. Promotes conversation, debating and offers a unique twist on pub grub with its selection of snackettes.

The Symposium houses a single room of a retail block overlooking Mesnes park just a stone throw from Wigan town centre. The cellar was purpose built into the room as was the solid oak bar which incorporates a full sized chilled cabinet for food.

Outside is the perfect people watching space and has awnings to keep the sun off. Fleece blankets are kept in a basket by the door for

customers to use when it gets chillier and we also have a couple of outdoor heaters.

Dogs are welcome in the outside area.

  • Draught Beers

Our draught beers come directly through the chilled cellar wall straight to the glass.

Peroni, Carling, San Miguel, Thatchers Gold Cider and Guinness. Top shelf treats –

We have a small selection of unusual malt whisky, gin, rum and brandy.

We serve a collection of Alcohol free beverages

Becks Blue, San Peligrino Lemon, Orange and Grapefruit. Fentimans ginger beer, cherry cola, dandelion and burdock, rose lemonade and Premium mixers

Hot Drinks are supplied by our bean to cup Rijo machine.

Coffee, Latte, Cappuccino, Mocha and Hot Chocolate.

We also stock Tea pigs fruit tea bags and traditional breakfast tea in a pot. We do not serve alco-pops, shots or fancy cocktails.

Unfortunately, we regret children are not allowed in the Symposium as the bar is directly in the only room we have.

Licensing laws do not allow children in the bar area and our space is too small to provide a separate room.

Children are welcome to sit outside and of course will be allowed to use the toilets.
